PetitionsSometimes, in our view, it makes sense to launch and /or support a petition. Although we get many requests to actively support the dissemination of initiatives by others we make our choises; when we consider it usefull. And this is when, according to our experience and insight of how (political) processes develop and work, international pressure is being built up by a simple list of as much as possible signatures. We have done so in the past with the issue of nuclear energy to be accepted or not in the scheme of the so-called flexible mechanisms developed to help tackle the climate problem (during COP6 in The Hague we presented the petition to Mr. Jan Pronk, then the chair of COP6 - he immediately made clear what is own position was; a refusal to accept nuclear energy as a solution). We did a somewhat simular petition during the CSD 9 negotations in New York where again nuclear energy was debated as part of the package of action to be taken to reach sustainable development.
In july 2002 we launched a petition to show the Southafrican government "the whole world is watching" in their attempt to build new nuclear power stations.
