Climate Change and Nuclear Power

Climate Change is increasingly recognized as one of the biggest challenges facing humanity. However, the nuclear industry has been keen to try and abuse legitimate concerns about climate change. By claiming that nuclear power is (part of) the solution to climate change, the industry hopes to create new demand for nuclear energy. Which they desperately need, considering the decline of the industry.

Luckily, at the Climate Conference in Bonn (COP6b), it was decided to at least not subsidize the export of atomic power stations to developing countries under the header of the so-called 'Clean Development Mechanism' or 'Joint Implementation.' This is a big victory for the anti-nuclear movement. However, it certainly isn't the end of the story.

The industry together with pro-nuclear governments will without a doubt keep pushing the 'climate argument' to defend nukes. They are clutching at straws to save themselves.

They will continue to use every possible forum and occasion to further their case, like they did at the UN Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD), and like many governments are doing domestically.

So: inform yourself and learn why nuclear power is definitely NOT a solution to climate change!
