The last commercial reactor in the Netherlands.
And a very small one: only 480 MW. It provides less than 5% of the consumption of electricity in the Netherlands.
The Dutch government decided in 1994 that the reactor should close by 2004. But the government failed to finalize the deal. The utility operating the reactor started a court case stating that they did not want to close…and won. It is now very unclear if and when the reactor will close. Dutch politics will decide this issue in the course of the year 2003.
To put pressure on the owner of the reactor, Essent (www.essent.nl), WISE ran a campaign in 2002 to influence public opinion. We have been quite successful. Despite 2 elections in a period of less than one year (which focused on crime, migration and security) we managed to get a lot of people involved and we are now putting pressure on the new government to close down the reactor.
