The Netherlands has one nuclear power plant, called Borssele, that is still operational. A few years ago the Dutch government decided that Borssele has to close down before 2004.
However, the owners of the NPP challenged this decision as they argue that their license is valid beyond 2004. On June 22nd this year, there was a court case between the owners (EPZ, Essent, Delta) and the Dutch government about this.
WISE, Greenpeace, Stop Borssele! (the local group who has been fighting the plant for the last 22 years), Milieudefensie [FOE-Netherlands] and Onkruit Vergaat Niet! organised an event on the 22nd of June, the morning of the court case, demanding that the NPP be closed down NOW, not in 2004, and certainly not later than that. No Nukes, not in the Netherlands, nor anywhere else!
This manifestation was also attended by the personnel of the Borssele nuclear power plant. The judgement as to whether or not Borssele has to close down before 2004 will be delivered on 21 September 2001. Keep an eye on our website or the WISE News Communique for the latest news!
