Reader on "Coalition of Non-Nuclear Countries" Workshop now available

(Documentation of an international workshop held in Vienna)

On February 27th 1998 AAI organized a work-shop on a "Coalition of Non-Nuclear Countries". More than 25 participants (NGOs and civil servants) from Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Sweden, the U.K. and Austria discussed fields and strategies for a closer cooperation between non-nuclear countries. One of the results of this workshop is a 80-page documentation summarizing the keynote lectures, discussions, and conclusions of this meeting. The documentation will be mailed out to all participants. Additional copies of this English version are avai-lable and can be obtained from AAI for a fee of 120 ATS. The documentation can also be downloaded from the AAI-homepage: www.aai.at.
The workshop was so much appreciated that a follow-up meeting was agreed on (presumably in September in Vienna).

Aarhus: The next opportunity
The next opportunity for Enviromental Ministers and civil servants of non-nuclear countries to meet and discuss closer co-operation will be the 4th Ministerial Conference "Environment for Europe" which will take place in Aarhus (Denmark) from 23rd to 25th June 1998.

Second Austrian-led Mohovce Inspecion

(Serious concerns regarding safety of the NPP)

In the second week of May an international team of nuclear experts inspected the Slovak NPP Mohovce. The aim of this investigation, led by Prof. Wolfgang Kromp and sponsored by the Austrian Chancellory, was to look at safety deficits and technical shortcomings of the plant. The report will be available within a few weeks time. The plant operators already an-nounced to start reactor 1 in July, irrespectively of the findings of the mission. As we are writing this, the activation of the fuel rods is due before the end of May.

Siemens involved
The Slovak electricity utilities also stated that the high-risk reactors of Bohunice V-1 will continue to operate for an unspecified span of time, contrary to ealier engage-ments by Slovak president Meciar and others. Environmentalists, such as AAI, are already convinced that Mohovce is an unsafe plant (lack of a secondary containment, mix of Western with Eastern technology, etc) which never should operate. They also demand the shut-down of Bohunice V-1. Remarkably, Siemens is involved in the completion of Mohovce as well as in the life-time extension of Bohunice.

EP resolution on Mohovce and Bohunice
On May 14th the European Parliament passed by a majority of 85 % a resolution regarding Mochovce. The EP demands to postpone the operation of Mohovce till all safety concerns are resolved. The Parlamentarians also expect and demand the closure of Bohunice in case that Mohovce will be put into operation.
Austrian chancellor Viktor Klima has finally begun waving the "No to Slovakian EU membership" stick at the Meciar regime - a step Austrian NGOs demanded much earlier, before basic decisions on the completion on Mohovce were taken.
