France: The end of the Carnet project, finally

After 20 years it looks like the end has finally come for the proposed site of a nuclear reactor in the Loire estuary near Le Carnet. On September 16 the French Prime Minister declared a stop to the project, and prescribed procedures to classify the site into a protected area.

(478.4744) WISE Amsterdam -Only one political speech and an official publication in the French state journal will mark the end of the Le Carnet project. Already for 20 years the estuary of the river Loire at Le Carnet in France was the area where different French governments planned to build new reactors, the so-called European Pressurized Reactor (also see WISE NC 467.4642, 471.4666 and 474.4697). In an official letter dated September 16, Prime Minister Jospin declared not to continue the Carnet project. The procedure to classify the site as a projected area would start in the next months. Already on May 6, Jospin, who at that time was not yet in the government, said in a speech in nearby Nantes that he did not want a nuclear power plant at Carnet. On June 1, during the general elections, a demonstration against the proposed nuclear reactor was held by 10,000 people.

In reaction to the news, the regional anti-nuclear group FAN44 (Fédération AntiNucléaire 44) claimed to remain very alert at the results of discussions on the future of the area between different ministries. The classification of the site into a protected area would be the best option to avoid that this expensive, useless and dangerous project would return to the agenda if there is a change of government in the future.
