Le Carnet: Protests after start preparation

The regional prefect in Le Carnet, were the french government is doing preparation work for a new nuclear reactor (see also WISE NC 467.4642), asked electricity company Electricité de France (EdF) to suspend embankment works on the Carnet site.

(471.4666) Pascal Braud -The demand came after a large demonstration on 22 March in the streets of Nantes in which 10,000 persons protested against the start of the preparation works.

On 18 March, EdF worked for some hours in the wet area to clean it up from old boats. Local citizen commitees started a telephone alert network to mobilize people. Within 2 hours some 200 people hurried to the site. After misleading two workers and their dogs, who protected the site, topographic material was destroyed. EdF lodged a complaint against the protesters for a damage of FF200,000 (US$35,000). After this, no new attempt was made to work on the site. Local groups are very watchful as they know that the time allowed for EdF is very short and embankment works (which are estimated to last 4 years) have to start within the next weeks to keep on time for the construction of the European Pressurised Reactor, to be put in service in 2010.

On 31 May and 1 June, the Fédération Antinucléaire 44 will organise an international gathering in Carnet for (international) support. During those days village partnerships, forums, campings, restaurations and concerts will take place. A human chain will be organised on 1 June from Carnet to connect the towns Nantes and Saint Nazaire (56 kilometers). They account for 800 persons each kilometer. International support by e-mail, fax or mail increases the impact on the media for this initiative.

The struggle of Carnet is international because the proposed nuclear reactor is the first of the second french nuclear programme. The EPR is designed jointly by KWU/Siemens and Framatome and is above all ment as an export product instead of for replacing older french reactors.
