Sellafield women's peace camp

Enclosed with this WISE Newscommunique is a postcard published by the Sellafield Women's Peace Camp.

The camp has launched a postcard campaign directed at Mr. Johm Guiness, Chairman of British Nuclear Fuel at Sellafield, UK. The idea for the campaign arose at the women's camp in July 1996. It aims to enhance the energy and vitality of the successful "Woman Speak Out" event that the camp organized in April to mark the 10th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.

The campaign of the Women's Peace Camp in Sellafield is to break the nuclear-military chain, and to stop violence against women and against the earth. The women's camp outside the Sellafield Visitors Centre on the last weekend of every second month. With its colorful banners, information displays and placards, the camp is a visible symbol for workers, visitors and the local people.

They also take non-violent direct action: they peacefully trespass on the site many times, distributing leaflets in offices, sometimes committing damage. They also blockade and stop workers entering the plant, thus impeding site operations. They also hold vigils to remember those who have died and suffered as a result of radioactive emissions.

Note: If you live outside the UK and want to send your sign of protest, please do not forget to write "UK" under the address on the postcard.

Address of the Sellafield Women's Peace Camp: Dept. 66, 1 Newton Street, Manchester M1 1HW, UK. Fax: +44-161-799 7066.
